One of the joys of retirement is having more time to spend on the things we enjoy, whether it?s seeing more of our family, going on holiday more often, or simply appreciating our gardens a bit more.
But as we age, the types of gardening problems we experience are not necessarily restricted to dealing with pests and weeds. We may find it more difficult to do the basic gardening jobs that require us to get down on our hands and knees to pull the weeds out, or pick up the grass cuttings after cutting the lawn.
Fortunately there are ways to combat this ? even if it means looking at our garden in a totally different way and making some changes that will allow us to enjoy it fully once more.
The Most Common Gardening Problems
Ground level beds and borders present the biggest gardening problems for elderly or infirm gardeners, but luckily this is also one of the more easily solved issues. Raised beds not only look attractive, they can be built from a wide choice of materials and designed to fit in with the existing garden design.
Wooden railway sleepers are a popular addition to any garden and look fantastic when built up into a bed. You can also create several beds of different heights to add a striking visual effect.
Fortunately, finding and buying the materials for raised beds isn?t on the list of gardening problems. Scrap yards and junk yards can be a veritable treasure trove of old items that would be ideal as raised planters and beds. Old cut off barrels filled with a bright array of plants are easy to tend to without the need to bend down.
Of course, not all gardening problems can be dealt with so easily. You can?t raise the lawn to make picking up grass cuttings easier, but there are an increasing range of tools which have been designed with extra long handles, to make such jobs much easier and more comfortable on the back and knees.
You can visit your local garden center to see what other items they have to make gardening easier, but the best place to look is often the internet as there are companies which sell a wide range of goods designed to make life easier for the elderly, including tools to be used in the garden.
With the right preparation, many of the gardening problems experienced by the elderly can be eliminated altogether, allowing them to enjoy their gardens for many more years.
